Strategies for Improving Work-Life Balance

Organize & Plan
Plan, Plan, Plan. Proper planning is the first step to achieving a balanced work-life. Organization and prioritizing your tasks, work related and in your personal life, can greatly reduce the stress you might be feeling and possibly increase your productivity! Calendars and lists are a great way to start to get started and finding your rhythm. There are also online tools such as Monday.com & Trello for a more advanced organization.

Setting Boundaries and Work Hours

Being a remote worker and working 99% of the time in the place I live, can really create unhealthy boundaries in my daily life. That’s why it’s crucial to set clear hours for work, this will allow you to be fully engaged in your work or personal time. Letting you coworkers, family and friends know what your hours are and see you uphold those hours, will make those times where you have to say “No” alot easier.

Taking Time Off

Take time off! This is vital for our mental health and enjoying life. Life is too short to work 24-7. This means using your PTO as well as taking breaks through out your work day to relax your brain. I also try to take 10 min after a meeting to decompress. It’s been proven that if you take your PTO, giving your mind and body a rest helps prevent burning out and encourging a more productive mindset when you return.

Prioritizing Health

The foundation for maintaining a good balance in both work and life is staying active, making sure you get enough sleep, and healthy eating. All of these things can suffer if you are overworkerd, over stressed and having htat cross over of work and life. Sometimes there are other factors that come into play, but if you can focus on those 3 aspects, is always a great start! Stay active, get some sleep & try to eat healthy!
Finding a Job You Love
This, I believe might be the hardest part. There are many jobs in the world, but access to those jobs aren’t always the easiest to find. Whether you are living with limited opportunities or lack of access to the internet or other tools can make this the most difficult part. But, an important thing to note is that being happy in your workplace plays a huge role in having a balanced work-life dynamic. Finding a job that you love helps in ways of stress and overall happiness, making your personal life less dedicated to “what’s going on at work” and less work stress rolling over into your personal time.

How Managers Can Support Work-Life Balance

It’s important to note that a good manager will encourage their team to unplug and unwind.
Encouraging Unplugging

    • If a manager is wanting you to work outside of your work hours, it’s most likely the fault of the manager for not prioritzing their work load correctly or not using the appropriate resourse.
    • A good manager will encourage the importance of disconnecting and understands that when their team is well rested and happy with their work life balance, they can get the best production and team work work!

Setting an Example

    • As a manager, it’s also important to have a balance work-life, as you want to bring you A game to work every day as well.
    • My motto as a manager is “Lead by Example” If I want my team to be doing something, I will make sure I’m following the same rule and guidelines.
    • I often will encourage walking during meetings, taking those 30 minutes to go pick up the kids from school, taking a 10 min break to shower or unwind. These are all things I encourage my team to do.

Be Flexible

    • If I had a penny for every time I mentioned the importance of flexibility on the team, I’d be a billionaire.
    • Being flexible as a manager helps encourage a better work-life balance with the team
      • Ex: If a person needs to leave at 12pm for an appointment, allow them to switch up their schedules. This allows them to spend their PTO on the fun adventures, not a doctors appointment.

The right balance between our professional and personal lives is a journey, not a destination. It needs to be constantly reevaluated of your priorities and boundaries, as life is always changing. Ultimately, achieving a work-life balance is an ongoing process that increases not only your productivity and career satisfaction but also our overall quality of life. It’s about making intentional choices that align with our values and goals, both at work and outside of it.  So, let us embrace the journey towards a balanced life, recognizing that each step taken is a step towards a healthier, happier self.
